Docotral studies
This page contains important information on doctoral studies in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology. The official doctoral degree regulations of the department can be viewed.
The path to a doctorate begins with the application for admission to the doctoral procedure and ends after the submission of the dissertation and the examination with the completion of the doctoral procedure. The main steps and documents to be submitted are explained below.
A deadline for submitting the applicant's documents is set at one week before the meeting of the doctoral committee.
In any case, however, the doctoral regulations and the amendment to the doctoral regulations of the department must be consulted, which contain all details and are binding.
Once a supervisor has been found and the supervisor has agreed to supervise the candidate, the application for admission to the doctoral procedure must be submitted to the Chair of the Doctoral Committee within 4 weeks of the confirmation of supervision.
The candidate must submit the following documents with the enclosures specified therein to the Chair of the Doctoral Committee, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Rehtanz, Institut ie³, Martin-Schmeißer-Weg 12, 44227 Dortmund. The documents must be submitted in digital form and also in printed form. These documents are
- the proposed topic of the dissertation
- written confirmation of supervision from a university lecturer in the department
- Abitur certificate, Bachelor's certificate and Bachelor's certificate, as well as Master's certificate and Master's certificate
- Curriculum vitae in tabular form with academic and professional background
- Declaration of discontinued/completed doctoral procedures/admission
- List of grades of the Master's certificate
- List of grades of the Bachelor's certificate
The examination and admission takes place at the next meeting of the doctoral committee, which meets approximately six times a year. After admission, the doctoral candidate must enrol as a doctoral student at TU Dortmund University. Proof of enrolment must be submitted to the doctoral committee no later than 3 weeks after admission. This is followed by a doctoral phase lasting several years, taking into account the structured doctoral program. Once the dissertation has been completed, it is submitted as follows.
The doctoral candidate's application for acceptance of the dissertation and thus for the opening of the doctoral examination procedure must be submitted in writing to the doctoral committee of the department. This should also include a proposal for the co-supervisor.
The doctoral candidate must submit the following documents with the enclosures specified therein to the Chair of the Doctoral Committee, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Rehtanz, Institut ie³, Martin-Schmeißer-Weg 12, 44227 Dortmund. The documents must be submitted in digital form and also in printed form. These documents are
- the dissertation in four bound, typewritten copies

- a written affidavit that the dissertation was written independently and that all sources and assistance used were noted in the dissertation
- Declaration whether the dissertation has already been submitted in the current or another version at TU Dortmund University or at another university in connection with a state or academic examination
- Proof of successful completion of the structured doctoral program by means of a certificate from the supervisor
- Abitur certificate

- Letter from the doctoral committee on admission to the doctoral program
After the meeting of the doctoral committee, the candidate will receive a letter with information on acceptance, the composition of the examination committee and the further course of the procedure. The referees submit independent, reasoned reviews to the doctoral committee within 10 weeks. In their reports, they recommend acceptance, revision or rejection of the dissertation. If the dissertation is accepted, it will be made available for inspection in the Dean's Office ET and IT for a period of 14 days. If there is no objection within 3 days of the end of the display period, the dissertation is accepted.
An examination date for the oral doctoral examination can then be arranged. The secretariats of the supervising chairs are responsible for arranging the date of the oral examination in cooperation with the doctoral candidate.
The oral doctoral examination begins in the form of a public presentation on the results of the dissertation lasting 45 minutes, followed by a discussion of no more than 15 minutes. This is followed by the non-public viva voce, which lasts 60 minutes. The candidate must make their own arrangements for the public presentation (including booking the room and setting up the room with a projector, blackboard, pens, drinks, etc.). An invitation for the doctoral lecture must be prepared, printed and sent out in consultation with the Dean's Office for Electrical Engineering and Information Technology. Appropriate address lists must be submitted for this purpose. Please note that additional cards must be ordered from the Dean's Office for invitations to be sent personally.
Doctoral students fill out the form "Aufhebung der Rückmeldesperre" themselves, have it signed by the supervising professor, submit it to the re-registration office and then upload the letter to the campus portal.
