Chair of Communication Networks Develops Innovative Wireless Ad Hoc Location System

At the conclusion of the CELIDON-PRO research project, an integrated location tracking and augmented reality system for firefighters was successfully demonstrated under realistic operational conditions. The technology enables emergency responders to track the position and distance of their team members in real time, even in thick smoke, amid debris, and with severely limited visibility. Compact ultra-wideband modules are integrated directly into the personal protective equipment for this purpose. The direction and distance information is displayed in the field of view of the responders via a screen in their respirator masks. The system does not require any pre-installed waypoints or other fixed infrastructure and can therefore also be used in unfamiliar operational environments.
The Chair of Communication Networks (ComNets) at the Department of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology developed this innovative wireless ad-hoc positioning system. The final demonstration showed how modern communication, sensor fusion, and positioning technologies can contribute to better orientation, coordination, and safety during firefighting operations in the future. This illustrates how the department’s research can contribute to a more resilient society.
